Side hinged doors are gradually becoming more popular. This is probably because more people today use their garage as a store room, somewhere to keep the bicycles, or even a laundry room, and don't actually keep a vehicle in the garage. The side hinged door makes it easier for pedestrian access to the garage, without having to lift the entire door up.
